Earthworm Jim HD is brought back to life in the XBLA. In this adventure it mixes a really good game with a lot of laughs. I thought it was hilarious when it first came out, now some 15 or so years later it seems even funnier. I was expecting a Wii type port, but what I experienced was much more. I forgot how challenging the game was with the Pitfall type obstacles and how fun it was to go through each challenge that was presented. This game really brought back what I forgot I missed. Here is a run down.
The Graphics
I didn’t notice much until I popped it up on my emulator how much improved the graphics are. I mean, you know it’s a throwback but to see the original in comparison is night and say. Great frame rates, less pixelation, and and improved soundtrack bring this game up to today’s standards for an XBLA title. It’s no Braid, but it is much better than what I remembered.
The Game Play
The game play feels exactly like the original. The way the character moves, accuracy with the weapon and latching on to things was never perfect, however, using the 360′s controller makes it much more comfortable. This game is more of a run, gun and fun game then an attempt to make the pinpoint accurate movements necessary in some other titles. In it’s original state it was a keep it moving game, with the 360 it just feels more comfortable. The bonus levels are fun and the multiplayer has the “New” Super Mario Bros. / Little Big Planet feel. Neat, but not the whole selling point for this title.
The Story
Ummm, it’s Earthworm Jim. It’s ridiculous. It’s hilarious. Not completely immersive, just a fun and funny time.
The Verdict
I missed this game from it’s original. Didn’t realize it until playing it in it’s HD glory. I honestly don’t see myself dusting off the old consoles and busting out the cartridge to get back into it, but it was nice to visit and have a little fun. My son, who is 17, did not enjoy this as much as I did. He felt it was a bit clunky in the game play department and was not impressed with the graphics. So, maybe it’s not for him. He’s more a Gears of War / COD man. Me, I was more than happy with the port. So, I have to say, if you liked the original it’s a buy. If you don’t remember the original or did not play anything prior to the PS1 I would check the trial version before you go shelling out mom & dad’s money.
Score: 7/10
