What do you get when mix ultimate frisbee, tennis, and sonic speeds? WindJammers! This game was awesome and even to this day isn’t known by most gamers. This can mostly be blamed on the fact that it was only ever released for the Neo Geo, which never really caught on with the mainstream consumers.

WindJammers is a game that is simple at first, but when you get into the mechanics it becomes a tough game to master. When you get two people together who have mastered the spins and super shots the entire match can be one adrenaline packed, controller gripping, palm sweating hell of a time.

The idea behind the game involves a mixture of tennis and soccer. Each player guards a goal, located on either side of the field which is divided in the middle by a net, when the Frisbee is thrown past the opposing player into a goal points are awarded to the scoring player. It’s each players job to not only guard their net, but to also attempt to score on the opponent.

The standard action is to throw the disc forward toward the opposing side. You can control each throw using the joystick and can also curve the throws by doing a standard quart-circle and half-circle motion.  Each player is able to dash in order to catch a Frisbee that is normally out of reach. If a player times a dash to hit the Frisbee as soon as it arrives to their character they will have an opportunity to perform a power shot. Each character has their own power shot that is unique to each. Power shots have the ability to knock an opposing player into their own net giving the thrower the full point value.

WindJammers is one of the better games on the Neo Geo because it’s one of the most unique. It creates an original game that keeps the competitive multiplayer gameplay that most Neo Geo fighting games like Samurai Shodown have. Try out WindJammers with a few buddies sometime on an emulator and check out one of the most original games on the Neo Geo.
